The Opportunity Council has hired Jenny Weinstein as its first housing development director. In her new role, Weinstein will lead agency efforts to increase and preserve affordable housing opportunities throughout Island, San Juan and Whatcom counties.
Weinstein was previously Senior Housing Developer at Catholic Housing Services and most recently at DESC in Seattle. Locally, she led development efforts that produced Francis Place supportive housing in downtown Bellingham, and Villa Santa Fe, housing for agricultural workers on Bakerview Road in Bellingham.
In her new role at the Opportunity Council, Weinstein is leading efforts to develop a new supportive housing facility in Bellingham’s central city neighborhood and also acquire and preserve an affordable 20-unit apartment complex in Friday Harbor.
Greg Winter, OC executive director, said the agency is increasing its capacity to develop, preserve and manage affordable housing in response to a vital community need.
“We know people are finding it very challenging to find housing that is healthy, safe and affordable,” Winter said. “ With increased capacity and support, I’m confident the Opportunity Council will have a meaningful impact in our three-county region as we take steps to preserve and develop housing opportunities.”
