Local agencies team up to present ‘Housing Week’ in Bellingham

First ever Whatcom Housing Week announced for November

BELLINGHAM, WA, October 2017 – The Opportunity Council, Sustainable Connections, Kulshan Community Land Trust, and Unity Care NW announce a brand new event, Whatcom Housing Week. Running November 6 – 9, Housing Week aims to build awareness and support for innovative housing solutions that create diverse, vibrant, and healthy homes for all.

Housing week will feature:

  • presentations from national experts
  • deep-dive workshops
  • a green building conference
  • area tours highlighting accessible housing solutions

Bellingham and Whatcom County are reaching an unprecedented housing crisis, and now is the time to have important conversations and action around affordability, livability, and homelessness. Housing week partners and sponsors have a shared goal to increase opportunities for people of all income levels and hope that this event provides the education and awareness to empower advocates, and increase dialogue about positive solutions.

Highlights from Housing Week include the Opportunity Council’s kickoff event on Monday with Rep. Nicole Macri that will focus on housing equity, the Innovative Homeownership Talk & Tour showcasing existing projects working to address affordability on Tuesday, and a special presentation by renowned expert Dr. Suzanne Lennard on Wednesday. Lennard’s talk and the following panel discussion will focus on the social, cultural, and psychological aspects of architecture and urban design, clarifying how the built environment affects social interaction, health, and quality of everyday life.

Whatcom Housing Week is made possible by generous support from the City of Bellingham, Whatcom Community Foundation, United Way, Community Health Plan of Washington, the Chuckanut Health Foundation, and the Whatcom County Health Department.
