Golfers win, kids win at annual tournament

Local businesses, golfers raise over $20,000  

BELLINGHAM Wash. — Over 100 golfers competed in the Opportunity Council’s “Golf FORE Good” Tournament Friday, Aug. 3, at Shuksan Golf Course. The golfers, together with business sponsors and donors, raised $20,500 (net) to help local children.

The first place winning golf team in the scramble-format tournament included Les Williams, Steve Frizzell, Larry Binches, and Dave Trantham. The second place team members are Tyler Rouse, Joel Lawrence, Eric Jacobs, and Seth Pheifer. Third place team members are Jim Emerson, Kevin Kurtz, Jon Christie, and Dan Taubenham.

The women’s division winning team members were Kerri Larrabee, Bonnie Frank. Kristin Fuchs, and Laura Haggard.

Men’s longest drive winner was Travis Johnson and women’s was Kristin Fuchs. Closest to the Pin award went to Bob Hand for men’s and Donna Hartzel for women’s. Putting contest winner was Josh Walker.

Proceeds from the “Golf FORE Good” tournament support Opportunity Council’s early learning and child care programs for children who have disabilities or who are disadvantaged, homeless or in very low-income families.

“The ‘Golf FORE Good’ tournament is one of my favorite events of the year.  It is a fun, well-run event that helps support important services in our community.  We’re proud to help sponsor this event,” said Sheldon Satterthwaite, HUB.

Tournament presenting sponsors included Peoples Bank and Superfeet. In addition to HUB, major sponsors included IMCO, Belcher Swanson Law Firm, Windermere, Barron, Smith and Daugert, Pacific Continental Realty, Lithtex NW, Robison Hardwood & Homes, WECU, CAZ Energy Services, Aetna, Special-T Signs, Philadelphia Insurance, Hilltop Restaurant, Diehl Ford, and Boundary Bay Brewery.

Additional businesses sponsored holes and provided raffle donations to make the tournament a success. Over 70 door prizes were given out to golfers in addition to raffle prizes that included weekend trips to Arizona, Lopez Island, an Apple Watch from City Mac, a $500 gift certificate to DeWaard and Bode, and more.
